| Cycling Camp Packing List |
Introduction - Before jumping to the packing list, read the notes below about bike packing and maintenance. And while you read through the list, make sure and take a look at our notes. There is a reason for everything. Bike Packing - We strongly recommend the use of a hard shell case specifically designed to transport your bicycle. If you're not sure how to pack your bike well, check with your local professional bicycle dealer or go to http://www.webfoot.com/travel/tips/pack.bike.html for some great tips. Bicycle Safety and Maintenance - We recommend a full mechanical inspection several weeks prior to your departure - the travel and terrain will fully test your equipment. By having your bike tuned professionally well prior before departure, you will have ample time to shake down adjustments and any new equipment. Be sure to replace worn tires, brake shoes, etc. Basic Cycling Packing List - These are just a few suggestions. You will have to be prepared for most weather conditions except for snow! If it does rain, the wind chill can cool you down very quickly. - Helmet - short-sleeve jerseys (4)
Gearing - We suggest a lowest (easiest) gear of 39x23 for strong cyclists and 39x25 for fit, touring cyclists. If you're not sure add easier gears (the same hill at the end of a long ride can suddenly feel like a mountain!). Cycling Shorts - Get the best cycling shorts that you can afford and make sure you test them thoroughly. Generally, the more panels (pieces) a short has, the better. Three pairs should be sufficient if you can acquire the habit of daily washing. Cycling Shoes - Great for efficiency, especially while climbing and will save your feet considerable agony. Sandals - It's always nice to have something casual to slip into after a ride instead of clunking around in your cleats. Wind/Rain Jacket - Essential for variable weather conditions. Even though we are in Hawaii, you never know what hand mother nature will deal. It's always better to be a little too warm and dry than cold and wet! Cycling Vest - A vest can be very useful when it's cool and wet or, for a long descent. Sun Protection - Strongly recommended for lips, skin and eyes - especially for those of us coming from Northern climes that don't see a lot of sun in the Winter! Tools/Spare Parts -Huberbikes in Kailua-Kona will provide a full range
of technical support, but if you have any extremely specific equipment,
you should bring the appropriate tools. It never hurts to carry a small
saddlebag with a small multi-tool and at least 2 spare tubes. Spare/replacement
parts may be purchased at a camp discount through Huberbikes.
